Matthew 4.8-10 cont.

8 Again the devil takes Him to a very high mountain, and he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

9 And he said to Him: “ I will give You all these, if you will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus said (says) to him: “Go away, satan; for it has been written: You shall worship the Lord you God, and Only Him shall you serve.””

The desire to worship appears to be a part of our human spirit; it seems to be something that God has written into our DNA.

Satan knew this. Before he led the rebellion in Heaven he was a worshipper of God and the Lord Jesus.

God speaks of this rebellion:

[12] “How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world.

[13] For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north.

[14] I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High’ – Isaiah 14.12-14 (NLT).

As part of his purpose in tempting Jesus to worship him, satan was aspiring to elevate himself above God and so receive worship and adoration from Jesus, the Son of God, and those whom He had created.

(There are some who claim that satan was the music leader in Heaven, before his rebellion and being cast out of Heaven. This is hard to confirm from the word of God, because the Hebrew is difficult to translate.)

Satan still comes to men and women to get them to worship him. This is most obviously seen in the activities of the occult, where satan worship is practiced. Obviously those who receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour must have nothing to do with this.

Satan also tries to lead people into worshipping him by getting them to read tarot cards, and horoscopes, attend so called ‘spiritualist churches’. In reality these are not churches, since they are not part of the Body of Christ.

We must be aware of the devils schemes to lure us into worshipping him and away from worshipping God in spirit and truth.

Our means of defence is to command satan to leave us, and to stand on God’s word that tells us that we must only worship the Lord our God, and Him only shall we worship.
