John 15.4-5 cont.
4 You must remain in Me, and I will in you. Just as the branch cannot produce fruit from within itself if it does not remain in the vine, neither can you if you do not remain in Me.
5 I am the Vine you are the branches. The person remaining in Me and I in him will produce a lot of fruit, because apart from Me you can do nothing.
Jesus continues the illustration of the vine and the branches. We have seen how Israel cut itself off from the true Vine, and, therefore, was unable to produce the fruits of righteousness.
Here is a great lesson for us to learn, and it is that the fruits of righteousness can only flow from Jesus, just as grapes can only be produced and grow when the branches are connected to the vine.
Branches that are on their own are fruitless, because they do not have the life, energy, and vitality flowing into them from the vine. Therefore, they will wither and die, producing the fruits of death. This is exactly what happened to the nation of Israel, but Jesus came to graft us back into Himself, the Vine.
If we want to produce the fruits of righteousness we must remain joined to the Vine, Jesus, the source of all righteousness.
In verse 5 Jesus makes another great promise, and it is that by remaining in Him we will produce a lot of fruit.
What fruit are we producing?
There is a lot of fruit that we can produce through remaining in the Vine including the fruit of the Holy Spirit:
But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law – Galatians 5.22-23.
Are we producing this fruit in our daily life? As I ask myself this question it is important that I concentrate on what I’m producing, which is determined by my relationship with Jesus. The same is true for every believer.
In order for us to produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit we have to remain in Jesus; by so doing we are guaranteed that He will remain in us.
Jesus went on to say that apart from Him we can do nothing. The world may be full of people who boast of what they can do. The Body of Jesus needs to be full of people who boast of what Jesus does in and through us.
All our efforts at ministry of any kind are worthless and useless if we are not joined to the Vine.
