John 14.16-18 cont.
16 and I will ask the Father and He will give to you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever,
17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows Him. You know Him, because He remains in you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you as orphans, I am coming to you.
We all value truthfulness, yet the truth is often portrayed through different aspects, depending on who is speaking.
Suppose a number of people witness an accident. They will be required to give an account of what they saw. There may well be some differences in the statements that each individual gives, because we see things from different perspectives. It is for the courts to try and determine what the exact truth us.
Jesus had already told His disciples that He is the Truth. In other words there is no variance of His truth. Therefore, since Jesus is the Truth, and the Spirit is the Truth, we can see that Jesus and the Spirit are One. Here we can see that the Father, Jesus, and the Spirit are One.
The word truth refers to that which is real, it is not surreal, which is something that appears to be true, such as is experienced in dreams. The Truth of Jesus and the Spirit is undeviating; it is ideal, and that which is ideal is perfect.
The word truth also refers to the Divine Truth revealed to mankind.
Therefore, when Jesus said the Helper is the Spirit of Truth He is saying that it is the Holy Spirit who alone is able to reveal to us the Truth about Himself and the Father.
No one else in Heaven and earth can do this.
Jesus went on to say that the world cannot receive the Spirit of truth. Jesus said that the reason for this is that the world does not know or see the Spirit.
Paul put it this way:
But people who aren’t Christians can’t understand these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them because only those who have the Spirit can understand what the Spirit means – 1 Corinthians 2.14 (NLT).
The world cannot discover the Holy Spirit, therefore, it cannot come to the Truth.
Our world, all it’s ideologies and philosophies will never bring us to the truth.
Pilate asked Jesus the question: What is Truth?
He did not know the Truth, even though the Truth (Jesus) stood in front of him.
May we always be in a position to receive the Truth of the Holy Spirit.
