Matthew 5.8 cont.

Oh the delight of the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Jesus made this statement:

21)   For from within, out of the heart of men comes the wicked imaginations: prohibited sexual activity, theft, murder,

22)   adultery, extortions, malice, deceit, unrestrained lust, an evil eye (envy), blasphemy (slander), arrogance, foolishness.

23)   All these things come from within a person, and going out they corrupt them” – Mark 7.21-22.

There are many words in the Scriptures that show us that our hearts are not pure. Therefore, it seems that no one is able to ascend the hill, because not one person has a pure heart.

David knew this, and He also knew that he, like everyone else was incapable of bringing purity into his own heart.

Therefore, he cried out to the Lord:

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me – Psalm 51.10

He knew that it was only the Lord God who had the power to create a new heart within him. Such a creation is and was a miracle of the grace of God.

In yet another Psalm David wrote:

[23] Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.

[24] Point out anything in me that offends You, and lead me along the path of everlasting life – Psalm 139.23-24 (NLT).

If David needed the direct intervention of God to purify his heart, we can be sure that we also need the grace of God in Jesus to cleanse our hearts from all unrighteousness.

This is the promise that we have:

If we should confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous so that He may forgive us our sins and might cleanse us from all unrighteousness – 1 John 1.9.

There is an old song with the following words:

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold and precious silver
Purify my heart
Let me be as gold, pure gold

Refiner’s fire
My heart’s one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You, Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You, my Master
Ready to do Your will

Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from my sin
Deep within.
