John 15.3

3 You are clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

Words are powerful things, and can be used as weapons, as blessings, as encouragement, and as discipline, as well as many other uses.

Words have been used to mobilize Nations and armies into war against other nations. Words can bring death to millions of people, but they can also bring peace and harmony.

There are no more powerful words than the words of God. It was by His word that all things have been created. John made this point at the commencement of his gospel:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

2 In the beginning He was with God.

3 Through Him all things came into being, and without Him not even one thing that has been created came into being – John 1.1-3.

The words that Jesus spoke were filled with the same creative power that brought the whole universe into being.

Therefore, Jesus was able to tell His disciples that they were clean because of the words that He had spoken. It was His word that brought them out of their sin dominated life into the purity of the Kingdom of God.

Paul picks up on this when he wrote about husbands and wives:

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up His life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word – Ephesians 5.25-26 (NLT).

How is the word of God able to make us clean and pure? It is only the word of God that is able to convince us of our sin, and of our need to receive Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.

Therefore, it is vital that we speak the word of God, because it is the wisdom of God for our salvation. The words of men or women may be helpful, they may be encouraging and comforting, but it is only the word of God that can transform our lives into the purity of His kingdom.

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives – Colossians 3.16 (NLT).
