Matthew 1.20-21

20 But having thought about this an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying: “Joseph, Son of David, you should not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what is conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit.

21 She will give birth to a Son, and Jesus is the Name you will call Him by, for He will save His people from their sins.

Joseph may have been caught in two minds as to how to move forward in the situation he found himself in. He had made a decision that was from his own limited understanding, without consulting with the Father on the out working of His plans.

We are always going to be in serious danger once we fail to bring Jesus into our planning,

We know that many of our decisions are instinctive. We do not always stop to consider what we are about to do, because we have been taught what to do, or because we have done the same thing many times before. However, this does not mean that the same decision based on previous experience is always the correct decision. Jesus may have a different way forward for us, something that we may not have considered before.

Whenever we are seeking to move forward in God’s purposes for our life it is imperative that we consult with Him and not rely on our own instincts.

Jesus said:

“If anyone should love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come and make Our home with him” – John 14.23.

This is a wonderful promise, which is a tremendous reward for consulting Him before we make our decisions.

Joseph is saved from making a horrible mistake by the intervention of the angel’s visit in a dream.

The fact that the angel tells Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife speaks of the fear filled state of mind he was in.

The appearance of angels to humans mostly comes with the calming words not to be afraid.

Our Father knows that if we live and move in fear we are not best placed to achieve his purposes.

Joseph is also reassured that Mary’s pregnancy is by the Holy Spirit.

The Lord will confirm in us those things in our live that have been born of the Holy Spirit.
