John 20.30-31 cont.

30 Now Jesus also did many other miraculous signs before His disciples, which are not written in this book.

31 However, these things have been written so that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, and that by believing you might have life in His name.

The wonder of the Scriptures is that they are the words of eternal life.

No other book in all of history can claim to bring life to us, let alone eternal life.

Books can fire our imagination, but that can and do fade away. Books can teach us how to do things, but what they teach soon becomes obsolete. Many years ago I collected a lot of books on car maintenance, but they have become irrelevant as cars have evolved beyond the knowledge contained within those manuals. Therefore, I threw them away.

However, the only book that will stand the test of time is the Holy Bible, because it is the God-breathed word of God.

John states in verse 31 that everything written in his gospel was written to bring people to believe in Jesus, so that all might have life in the Name of Jesus.

John, like all the other authors of the rest of the Bible, was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write down everything that is necessary for us to come to faith in God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul wrote these words:

Faith comes from listening to this message of good news—the Good News about Christ – Romans 10.17 (NLT).

Therefore, the more we read His word, the greater will be the increase in our faith in Jesus. Conversely, if we neglect to read and devour His word then our faith will wither and die.

Perhaps there may be times when we pray for more faith. On such occasions it would benefit us to read and meditate on the Scriptures, because in this way our faith will grow and increase beyond what we can imagine.

We must appreciate that there are many people who cannot read, but that is no barrier to the Holy Spirit planting the word of life into their hearts and souls. This is done through the preaching and teaching of the word of God.

However, for those who can read the Christian life cannot be sustained without regularly reading the Bible.

Let us all enjoy the privilege that we have of being able to freely read the words of life that God has delivered to us in the Holy Bible.
