Daily Reading: 28th October 2016

Matthew 5.31-32 cont.

31 It was said: “Whoever should divorce his wife must give her a letter of divorce.”

32 Now I tell you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on account of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever shall marry a woman who has been divorced, commits adultery.

From all of this we can see that Jesus was re-establishing the Father’s desire for the marriage of one man to one woman. Mark records that Jesus said:

“Whoever God unites man must not separate” – Mark 10.9.

From this we can see that divorce does not figure in God’s plans for marriage. Therefore, we must be aware that our enemy, the devil, will try and separate married couples, causing arguments, unfaithfulness, fundamental disagreements, selfishness, and a lack of respect etc.

Satan will try and make people believe that they can fall out of love, or fall in love with someone else.

We must reject the devils satanic schemes and make the choice to always love our spouse, to make the choice never to fall in love with someone else. If ever we find ourselves in such a situation of being tempted to fall in love with someone else we must turn to God and the promise is that we will see satan run from us:

[7] So humble yourselves before God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you – James 4.7-8 (NLT).

This is the best and most secure way of avoiding divorce or separation.

Whereas we must be sympathetic and compassionate with those who find that divorce is their only option, we must also point people to Jesus, who is the redeemer of all.

We must believe that Jesus can re-ignite the flames of love that brought a couple together. This requires prayer and spending time with Jesus so that He can direct our minds. It is as we present our bodies as a living sacrifice to Him that the words of Paul in Romans 12.2 become a reality:

Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect – (NLT).

We must also remind one another of the need to wear the whole armour of God with which we can withstand the attacks of the devil.
