John 16.13 cont.

13 When He comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will lead you into all the truth; for He will not speak of His own accord, but whatever things He hears He will speak, and He will announce to you the things that are to come.

In an attempt to discover the future people will go to fortune tellers, or consult those who deal with tarot cards, or read palms, and other such methods.

These are not the things that believers should be involved with, because there is only one who knows our future and that is our Heavenly Father. He knows all the days that are ordained for us.

God’s word tells us:

You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in Your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed – Psalm 139.16 (NLT).

God’s word also tells us:

“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the LORD your God” – Leviticus 19.31 (NLT).

Therefore, to try and discover the future by these means is to go against the command of God, and it is also to disregard the fact that God has foreordained our future. He will let us know what we need to know and He will do this through His Holy Spirit living within us.

Our trust must be in the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of our souls to see things of the future at the appropriate time.

Sometime He will do this through prophecy, or through a word of knowledge, such as when He spoke through Agabus, who was a prophet in the Early Church:

[27] During this time, some prophets travelled from Jerusalem to Antioch.

[28] One of them named Agabus stood up in one of the meetings to predict by the Spirit that a great famine was coming upon the entire Roman world – Acts 11.27-28 (NLT). The following verses tell of how the church then organized itself to help meet this famine.

Let us rest in the promise of Jesus that it is the Holy Spirit who will tell us about the things to come.
