Isaiah 9.6 cont.

[6] For a child is born to us, a Son is given to us. And the government will rest on His shoulders. These will be His royal titles: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

In the Uk during the last year we have had a General Election, which resulted in our government seeing the end of the coalition government of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, and the commencement of a completely conservative run government.

No doubt we may all have different views about the kind of government we now have.

As we celebrate the coming of Jesus into this world it is good for us to see that God foretold that the government would rest on His shoulders.

The word government means to rule, and to have dominion, it is to be the government.

In the Uk we understand government as being the Houses of Parliament where the political party with the majority of seats formulates all the laws with which they seek to rule the whole country.

Every country has its own government, and each government seeks to exercise its control either for the good or bad of its citizens.

The great prophetic message of Isaiah is that it is to Jesus whom the Father has given the government of all things. In verse seven the prophecy is that there will be no end to the increase of His government.

Paul emphasized this in Ephesians 1.9-10

9      so making known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kindly intent, which He purposed in Him

10    for the administration of the fulfilment of the times, to gather all things together in Christ, the things in heaven and the things on earth.

All things are heading towards coming under the control and authority of Jesus. All governments will eventually have to submit to Jesus. A wise government would seek to submit to the authority of Jesus, making it the main objective of its’ manifesto.

Governments who want the most beneficial outcome for their nations’ citizens could do no better than to seek the Lord to know His plans for their nation. At this Christmas time pray for our government to humbly turn to the Lord Jesus and seek His governmental rule for our nation.

At the same time let us all renew our giving our own life to the Lordship of Jesus.
