34 Then the crowd answered Him: “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever, how is it that You say it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”
There is a television programme entitled: Who do you think you are? It is a programme where various celebrities try and search back into their family trees to discover information about their family roots. They throw up a number of interesting facts, some of which they find quite emotional.
The Jews asked the question of Jesus: “Who is this Son of Man”?
We know what they thought, and it was that He would be the eternal and invincible Messiah, who would come and deliver them from the tyrannical power of the Romans. In this they had no thought for the Son of Man who was to die.
Therefore, they ask the question, wanting to know how Jesus could claim to be the Son of Man when He clearly foretold of His own death.
In their understanding death and the Son of Man did not go together.
It was at this point that doubts may have seeped into their minds. They had witnessed His miraculous healing power; they had heard His amazing teaching; they had seen how He confounded the religious authorities, but they could not conceive that as the Son of Man He could possibly die. Therefore, because Jesus did not meet their ideas of the Son of Man, they began to question the claim of Jesus to be the Son of Man.
This attitude is still around today. There are many people who may accept that Jesus lived, but they reject Him as the Messiah, because He does not match their ideas of what He should be like.
Many people have false ideas about Jesus. These ideas may be generated by worldly standards and philosophies, which, by definition are man-made and have nothing to do with Jesus being God’s revelation of Himself to us human beings, whom He has created.
The Philosophies of man and the religions of man may have their ideas of who Jesus is, but if they do not agree with what God says about Jesus, then they will lead to people rejecting the truth of Jesus.
Who do we say the Son of Man is?
The answer is to be found in what Jesus said: I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through Me – John 14.6.
