John 17

Chapter seventeen could well be described as the Lord’s Prayer, sometimes it is called the High Priest Prayer. In it we have a glimpse of the heart of Jesus as He communicates with His Heavenly Father.

Before we begin to consider this Prayer of Jesus it would be good for us to read it as a whole from beginning to end. This will give us a good foundation as we work through it.

We will do this over the next couple of days.

1 After saying these things, Jesus raised His eyes to heaven and said: “Father, the time (hour) has come, glorify Your Son, so that the Son may glorify You,

2 Even as You have given Him authority over all mankind (flesh), so that He should give eternal life to all whom You have given to Him.

3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know You, the only true God and Him whom You sent, Jesus Christ.

4 I glorified You on the earth, the work, which You gave Me to do, I have completed.

5 And now, Father, glorify Me with the glory We had together before the beginning of the world.

6 Your Name I have made known to the men whom You gave Me from the world. They were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.

7 Now they know that everything that You have given to Me comes from You.

8 Because I have given to them the words that You gave to Me, and they received them and they know in truth that I came from You and they believe that You sent Me.

9 I ask concerning them, not concerning the world, but concerning those You have given Me, because they belong to You.

10 And all the things that are Yours are also Mine, and I have been glorified in them.

11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are, as I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep them by Your name, the name which You have given to Me, that they may be one even as We are.
