Matthew 2.15

15 and was there until the death of Herod, so that which the prophet had spoken might be fulfilled: “I have called My Son out of Egypt.”

Egypt = double straits

It is unlikely that when Joseph and Mary left Nazareth to go to Bethlehem they had any idea that it would be many years before they could return home. Little did they realise they were leaving their home and family to commence married life in a foreign country.

Did they know that being obedient to God would engulf them in having to flee for their lives?

Were they aware that as they journeyed toward Bethlehem they were part of God’s bigger picture to bring His son out of Egypt?

From how chapter 2 unfolds it would appear it was by gradual revelation that Joseph learned how God was to direct his ways.

God knows the end from the beginning. There is much in us that wants to have the same understanding and foresight as God. However, our Father will only reveal to us as much of the future as we need to know to be able to follow Him. He does not give us information overload. He does not have a 5 year or 10 year plan for us, it is a life time plan. Yet He will only share with us as much as is necessary for us to have the faith to follow Him step by step.

Our personal experience is that we receive from the Lord as much revelation of His plans for us as is necessary. When I started in ministry in 1972 I had no idea where Jesus would lead us, nor where we would be forty four years later.

When Joseph and Mary took Jesus into Egypt, they did not know how long they would be there. That would be revealed to them at a later time, when they needed to know.

In the meantime they simple obeyed.

As the old hymn puts it:

Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. – John H Sammis 1887.
