John 20.21 cont.

21 Then again Jesus said to them: “Peace to you, even as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

It is within the greeting of “Peace be with you” that Jesus goes on to say: “as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

As we have seen the real meaning of the greeting of Jesus is ‘May God give you everything’. The sending out of His disciples is within the context of God giving them everything.

This is similar to what Jesus said in Matthew 28.18:

[18] Jesus came and told His disciples, “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth.

[19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The disciples are sent out by Jesus within His authority and within His blessing of God giving them everything.

I was watching a TV programme recently about fishermen. On one particular boat there was a young trainee, who had to provide all his own protective clothing, which is necessary for going out to sea.

Jesus is not like that with us. He provides all that we need for the tasks that He calls us to do.

Among His equipment that He provides for us are :

1 The fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control Galatians 5.22-23);

2 The gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, (1 Corinthians 12. the interpretation of tongues, serving, teaching, administration (leadership), encouragement, generosity, mercy (Romans 12.7-8);

3 The armour of God: the belt of truth; the breastplate of righteousness; the shoes of the gospel of truth; the shield of faith; the helmet of salvation; the sword of the Spirit; and prayer – (Ephesians 6.14-18).

This is a tremendous package, which ensures that every follower of Jesus is never ill equipped for being sent out by Jesus.

He said that as the Father sent Him so He was sending the disciples. This means everything that was at the disposal of Jesus, was at their disposal also.

This is true for each one of us.

Wherever God sends us and whatever He calls us to do He also equips us for His adventures for us.
