John 12.24-26 cont.
24 In all sincerity I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains only a seed; but if it should die it will bear a lot of fruit.
25 The person who loves his life will lose it, and the person who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 If anyone should serve Me, he must follow Me, and where I am My servant will be also. If anyone should serve Me My Father will honour him.
Those of us who are of the older generation may have had grandparents who were employed as servants to the more wealthy and affluent in society. Some of their servants would go where their masters went, accompanying them on their travels so that they could continue to serve them.
Jesus told the Greeks, and us as well, that serving Jesus means following Him so that we can be with Him. We cannot serve Jesus from a distance.
Neither does Jesus want us to serve Him from a distance. Moses had to learn that He could not stay at the burning bush and serve the purposes of God. The only way for him to serve God was to go to Egypt and confront Pharaoh.
Abraham had to learn that he could not serve God in the land of his father. For him to serve God he had to set out from his father’s home and go to a place that God would show him.
Serving Jesus is being a follower of Him, so that where He goes we go.
The location in which we serve Jesus is determined by Jesus, and not where we would like to be.
Jesus called twelve disciples, followers so that they might be with Him. They were with Him as disciples, servants, and followers.
When Jesus was in Galilee, His disciples were also there. When Jesus went into Samaria, His disciples went there with Him. When Jesus went to Jerusalem, the disciples went with Him.
In speaking to the Greeks Jesus made a wonderful promise, which is that His servants will be with Him.
There may be times when we do not feel that we are with Jesus. In such times it is always good to ask ourselves if we are serving Him in the right location. If not, then we better listen to Him and get to the place of service that He has ordained for us.
There is another wonderful promise from Jesus and that is in serving Him we receive honour from the Father.
Let us enjoy serving Him in the place of His appointment for us.
