John 14.24

24 The persons who does not love Me does not keep My words. Also the word that you hear is not Mine but is from the One who sent Me, the Father.

In these days we hear quite a lot about the ‘duty of care’ that people are required to have in certain occupations. Some of these duties are given in written statements, others are more informal and are given verbally.

Most people in the caring professions are keen to give the care that is necessary, but perhaps we have all heard stories about those who have fallen short in their duty of care. Maybe their heart is not in the job they are doing. Where this is true, it is probable that there will be a lowering of their standards of care.

Jesus said that those who do not love Him will not keep His words. He had already spoken about love for Him being displayed through obedience. He follows this by stating that where there is no love for Him there will be no obedience.

The truth is that the majority of people in the world do not love Jesus. Most people in Jesus’ day did not love Him. At the time of speaking there were only eleven disciples present, who loved Him. Perhaps there were a few others, including some women, who were not there, but who did love Him.

Jesus knew that most people He had encountered throughout His ministry did not love Him. They may have been astounded at His teaching and miraculous signs, but most would not have really loved Him.

There was a time when Jesus confronted the Pharisees about this, and He said:

“If God was your Father you would have loved Me; for I came from God and have not come from Myself. He sent Me” – John 8.42.

The consequence of not loving Jesus will be disobedience to His words. We cannot say that we love Him and then not do what He tells us to do. In not carrying our His commands we display the absence of love for Him.

In his first letter John put it this way:

If anybody should say: “I love God”, and should hate his brother, he is a liar; for the person who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, is not able to love God whom he has not seen.

Love for Jesus = obedience

Disobedience = no love for Jesus.

How do we measure up.
