Matthew 3.11 cont.
11 Indeed I baptize you in water for repentance, but One is going to follow me who is much stronger than me. I am not worthy to carry His sandals, He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire.
At the time of writing it is nearly 55 years since I started work as a junior porter with British Railways. It was on the 24th April 1961. The Station Master showed me around the small country station, outlining the work I was required to do. Much of this was cleaning and sweeping up.
In order to be able to do this I was provided with two brushes, a normal size one and a larger platform brush, a dustpan and hand brush, and various cloths and polish.
The Station Master made sure that I was fully equipped to carry out my daily duties.
Jesus calls each one of us to the task that God pre-ordained us to do a long time ago.
Jesus called the disciples and appointed them to be fishers of men.
As He calls us He also equips us by giving us the Holy Spirit.
What He calls us to do we cannot accomplish in our own strength. I would have been unable to keep the station clean without the equipment to do so.
The equipment that is necessary for us to do what He has pre-ordained that we should do is given to us through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It is only in the power and strength of the Holy Spirit living within us that enables us to work the work that is specific to each individual believer in Jesus.
As a junior porter I worked for eight hours a day, after which I ceased my work and went home.
This is not so for believers; we are never off duty. Jesus graciously gives us times of rest, which we need. However, with the fire of the Holy Spirit within us our life is consumed by wanting to continuously serve Jesus with passion and enthusiasm.
Passion for Your house has consumed me – Psalm 69.9 (NLT).
Jesus quoted this when He drove the money changers out of the temple.
It is with the Holy Spirit within us that we receive the passion to serve Jesus at all times, and we also receive the equipment to do His will for us.
Daily we need to go on being filled with the Holy Spirit and fire.
