John 14.22-23 cont.

22 Judas, not Iscariot, said to Him; “Lord, what has happened that You are to show Yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him: “If anyone should love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come and make Our home with him.”

We all like our homes to be comfortable, to be places where we can relax and enjoy the company of those whom we love. In the western world the majority of people are blessed to live in homes that have a number of rooms, whereas the majority of the people in the world live in very sub-standard accommodation, slums, and shanty towns.

The promise of Jesus is that He and the Father will make their home with us if we love Him and keep His commands. Therefore, our hearts should be places filled with the presence of Jesus and the Father. This should be the evidence that the King of kings is in residence.

In Revelation 3.20 Jesus said this to the churches:

Look, I knock as I stand (have stood) at the door. I will come in to eat with whoever hears My voice and opens the door to Me, and he will eat with Me.

The great thing about Christianity is that it is Jesus who comes looking for us. It is Jesus who wants our hearts to be His home. This is not true of any other religion.

Jesus knocks on the door of our heart, if we love Him we will obey His call by opening that door, giving Him access to come and make His home with us.

By saying that He will eat with us this verse shows the intimacy of fellowship that we have with Him through the Holy Spirit.

Later in chapter 15 Jesus uses a different illustration of the intimacy we have with Him when He describes Himself as the true vine, with us being the branches.

The Psalmist put it this way:

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty – Psalm 91.1 (NLT).

It has always been the desire of the Father to be at home with His people. God’s word to Moses was:

I will live among the people of Israel and be their God – Exodus 29.45 (NLT).

Let each one of us lovingly keep His word, for as we do we will know that our hearts are the home of the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
