John 16.28-30 cont.

28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again I leave the world and I am going to the Father.”

29  His disciples said: “See, now You speak plainly, no longer speaking figuratively.

30 Now we know that You know all things and that You have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came from God.”

There were a number of things that Jesus had said to His disciples that they did not understand.

Mark records in chapter 4.33-34 these words:

  1. And with such parables as these He preached the word to them, according to their ability to understand.
  2. But without parables He did not speak to them, but He explained all things to His disciples privately.

This was after Jesus had been teaching the people. He used parables to illustrate the nature of the Kingdom of God. Mark says that the reason was people could not fully grasp everything. Therefore, He spoke using word pictures to describe spiritual truths.

Not everyone would understand the word pictures, indeed the disciples appear not to have understood what Jesus meant; therefore, they asked Jesus about them:

9 Then His disciples asked Him what the parable meant.

This was after Jesus had told the parable of the Sower. Evidently the disciples did not understand the spiritual significance.

In the Upper Room, the disciples realized that Jesus was going to leave them and return to the Father. John said that they now grasped the fact that Jesus was eternal, that He was with the Father, and that He was about to return to the Father. They realized that He was, is and always will be.

Such an understanding of who Jesus is lifts Him higher than all other people. World leaders appear on the human stage, but they remain only a little while, some longer than others.

Yet, whether they are described as being good or bad, righteous or unrighteous, they, like all of us, go the same way. If they have confessed Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, they will go to be with Him. If they have not so then they condemn themselves to go and face the wrath of God and hell.

It is only Jesus who is exalted to the right hand of the Father.

It is only Jesus who has a name that is higher than any other name.

This is the plain truth.
