John 14.22-23 cont.
22 Judas, not Iscariot, said to Him; “Lord, what has happened that you are to show Yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus answered and said to him: “If anyone should love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come and make Our home with him.”
One of the beautiful things about commencing married life is the joy that husband and wife have of setting up home together. I remember this time from 45 years ago. We moved into a semi-basement flat in Anerley, South London. Like most married couples we had to buy the kind of furniture that would make it our home. The word of God tells us that it is the woman who builds a home:
A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands – Proverbs 14.1 (NLT).
The ability of the wise woman being able to build her home is an inheritance from the Lord; it is a God given ability.
I can say that I have been blessed with a wise woman.
The reply of Jesus to Judas talks about Him and the Father building their home with us.
This is another part of the progression that is based on our love for Jesus, which in itself is founded on His love for us. In his first letter John wrote:
The reason that we love is because He loved us first – 1 John 4.18.
As we love Him, so we keep His commandments. This again brings us the love of the Father, which then leads to the Father and Jesus making their home with us.
Earlier in the chapter Jesus had told them that He was going to prepare a home for them, and we know that this is our Heavenly home, our eternal dwelling place.
However, we do not have to wait until the Lord calls us home to know and experience His dwelling place with us whilst we are still on this earth.
These words are the fulfilment of the promise of God:
the Lord Himself will choose the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a Son and will call him Immanuel—‘God is with us’ – Isaiah 7.14 (NLT). These are words that the angel of the Lord spoke to Joseph in Matthew 1.23.
The way to know more about Jesus is to obey His commands, because this leads to Him and the Father making their home with us.
