John 14.21

21 The person who possess My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me, and the person loving Me will be loved by My Father and Myself, and I will love Him and show Myself to Him.

In Exodus 34 we read that Moses spent forty days and forty nights on the mountain with God. He wrote on two stone tablets the commandments that God gave to him. He came down the mountain holding in his hands those two stone tablets.

He had possession of those commandments. They were in his hands, and he was to deliver them to the people of Israel.

Jesus tells us that whoever possesses His commands and keeps them is the one who loves Him.

How do we posses His commandments?

Jesus has already given us the answer, which we have seen. It is that we should believe in Him. To believe in Him is to accept that He is who He says He is. Anyone who does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God will not place true worth and value of what He says. Such a person will not believe that His commands are really necessary for us.

Believing in Him is the first step to possessing His commandments.

Believing in Jesus leads us to love Him. When we love someone we accept what he or she says. If someone does not love Jesus they will not think it important to recognize the truth and reality of what Jesus says. On the other hand we will accept the words of someone whom we love. We will take on board what they say. Therefore, it is as we love Jesus that we simply accept that His commands are important for us to obey. There is no question or doubt.

Believing in Jesus and loving Him leads us to the next step, which is that we take possession of the commandments that He gives to us. This is like Moses receiving the two tablets of stone on which were written the commandments of God.

In his first letter John wrote:

But the love of God has really been made complete in whoever should keep His word. In this we know that we are in Him – 1 John 2.5.

Believing in Jesus and loving Him leads to us keeping His commandments, and then His love is made perfect in us.

God’s strategy for us to have perfect love is to obey His commands.
